In 2016, the eight-division world champion received backlash from the LGBTQIA+ community with his remark about same-sex marriage during his term as a Congressman for Saranggani, saying that they are “masahol pa sa hayop” (worse than animals).

It even infuriated some of the prominent and iconic members of the LGBTQIA+ Community, such as Boy Abunda.

However, with his bid for the Presidency, Pacquaio suddenly changed his stance about the LGTBQIA+ Community, noting that he had relatives and people he knew who were part of the said community.
